If you have a friend to help with pinning:
Stand straight and pull your trousers up to the position you’d like them to sit. Ask your friend to pinch the excess fabric at the centre back seam until the fit feels snug but comfortable — leave exactly two fingers of space for movement. Secure the fold with one safety pin.

To pin yourself:
It’s a similar process. Pull your trousers up to where you’d like them to sit, then pinch the fabric at one side and secure it with a safety pin, leaving exactly two fingers of space for movement.
